Fabiola Jean-Louis
Rewriting History

April 1–14, 2020
FIAF Gallery

Paris Photo, the acclaimed international art fair for photography, is making its New York debut this spring. As an extension of this inaugural edition, FIAF is proud to present Rewriting History in its gallery.

Showcasing the beguiling vision of Haitian artist Fabiola Jean-Louis, the exhibition features works that recast narratives of key historical moments, with black women as their protagonists.

Drawing inspiration from Vermeer, Fragonard, Gainsborough, and Boucher, Jean-Louis’s work is striking and surreal as it captures a woman’s powerful gaze. Using multiple mediums ranging from photography to paper sculpture, Rewriting History looks at the underbelly of our racially tinged past and shines a light on the artist’s vision of resilience and justice for the future.

Curated by Julie Meneret.

  • About Fabiola Jean-Louis
    • Brooklyn-based artist Fabiola Jean-Louis was born in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Her passion in the arts flourished while attending the High School of Fashion Industries in New York, however she discovered her talent for photography in 2013 when she began taking self-portraits as a matter of convenience, shyness, and to maintain artistic control over the stories she wanted to tell using her body. Her current practice is focused on experimentation through the use of different techniques, disciplines, and art styles. Her three-part ongoing series, Rewriting History, consisting of period paper gowns, painterly photographs, and Polaroids, opened as a solo exhibition at Smithsonian affiliates, DuSable Museum of African American History, Alan Avery Art Company, and Andrew Freedman Home to critical acclaim.
