What is the TEF ANF?


As of April 1st, 2020, persons wishing to acquire French nationality must attest to their level of spoken French (comprehension and expression) and of written French (comprehension and expression), as ordered by the French Ministry of the Interior.

TEF ANF can be used to meet these requirements.

Candidates must present themselves for TEF ANF assessment of listening comprehension, oral expression, reading comprehension and written expression at a testing center recognized by the Français des affaires-Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, such as the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) in New York.


What are the TEF ANF test sections?


TEF ANF is composed of four compulsory sections:

• Listening Comprehension 25 min
• Oral Expression 10 min
• Reading Comprehension 45 min
• Written Expression 30 min

Minimum Level required: B1 for each of the sections.

How is the TEF ANF graded?


The test evaluates the French skills of the candidate per the scale below.

This scale corresponds to:
• 6 skill levels A1 to C2 of the Common European Framework for Languages (CECR) of the Council of Europe
