Current Career Opportunities at FIAF

Job Title: Director of Cultural Affairs
Department: Programming
Reports To: President
Designation: Full-Time (Salary: $120,000 annually)

The French Institute Alliance Française embarks on a search for a visionary Director of Cultural Affairs to conceive, develop and implement audacious multi-disciplinary cultural programming (performing arts; talks visual arts) showcasing the best of French-speaking artists from all over the world, in Manhattan and in Montclair.

Organization
FIAF’s history begins in 1898, when the Alliance Française established a chapter here in New York City. In 1911, the Museum of French Art, French Institute was founded by francophile New Yorker MacDougal Hawkes, and in 1925 opened its space in a beautiful Beaux-Arts building at 22 East 60th Street, where FIAF still resides. In 1971, the two institutions joined together to create the French Institute Alliance Française.

As a product of their union, FIAF is infused with the spirit of the original French Institute. Designed to be a museum, library, intellectual and social club for New York’s francophone community, the French Institute is a place where all are welcome—a place of community, culture, support, and festivity.

FIAF is also part of the Alliance Française community created in Paris in 1883, and shares its values of freedom, education, and intellectual innovation. It is committed to carrying out its founders’ humanist mission of teaching the French language, organizing cultural events and activities, bringing together friends of the French-speaking world, and promoting French and francophone cultures. Alliance Française is apolitical and non-sectarian, and we believe that inclusion and openness are core values to our institution.

For nearly 120 years, FIAF has been the destination for starting, continuing, and perfecting French
language skills in a supportive, immersive, and culturally rich setting. Browse and register for classes here or learn more about our preschool here.

Through an unparalleled range of cultural events including live performances, film screenings, panel
discussions, wine tastings, and gallery exhibitions, FIAF invites New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds to engage with the best of French and francophone cultures.

FIAF offers unique access to French language and culture at our center in Montclair, New Jersey.

FIAF is home to one of the largest private French library in the US.

FIAF’s Cultural Programming
Following the arrival of a new President, Tatyana Franck, FIAF’s executive team worked on a new
strategic plan, to refine the mission of the organization, ensuring that everyone of the organization
understands the purpose of the organization, and how the envisioned future will be achieved. FIAF’s
cultural programming is in line with the following values:

  • Artistic Ambition: we present a broad range of outstanding artistic work that is bold, authentic, provocative, engaging, entertaining and inspiring. We support artists working at the highest levels of their own experience and craft.
  • Focus on francophone artists: we welcome artists coming from the entire French-speaking world, making sure that all areas of the world are represented.
  • A balance between historical and contemporary works: we thrive to obtain a balance between historical works and contemporary creations, established and emerging artists.
  • Centering our community: we are an organization based in New York and in New Jersey, anchored in the cultural vibrancy and rich diversity of the cities, committing to serve and expand our communities of American audiences.
  • Respect, Compassion, Social conscience: we lead with respect and compassion. We welcome artists and audiences from all horizons and strive to present works that broaden horizons. We strive to create opportunities, cultivate relationships and dismantle barriers using an anti-racist frame to include marginalized and underrepresented communities, both on stage and in our community.
  • Sustainability: FIAF strives to develop new sustainability practices for performing arts. We’re part of a global community of cultural organizations developing new practices to mitigate our own impact on climate change.

Housed in a beautiful and historic Beaux-Arts building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, FIAF offers versatile, state-of-the-art event and reception spaces that can accommodate a wide variety of special occasions. We present over 100 events / year in complimentary spaces: Florence Gould Hall Theater (361 seats); Tinker Auditorium (seated capacity 110; standing 300) and Le Skyroom (seated capacity 120; standing 200). In addition to these spaces, we present events outdoors (Madison Avenue for Bastille Day) and work in partnership with other organizations. FIAF doesn’t have a space for cultural events in Montclair and develops partnerships to present cultural programming there. Over Covid, FIAF installed a state-of-the-art livestream system and now offers hybrid events, accessible both in person and online.

FIAF offers a diversity of performances: theatre, classical or contemporary music, circus, dance, visual arts, etc. and panel discussions on topics ranging from fashion to culinary arts or architecture.

Outside of regular programs, FIAF presents every year its flagship performing arts festival Crossing The Line as well as kids programs Tilt Kids Days.

In addition to general audience programming, FIAF develops a Young Audience Program specifically
designed for schools of the tri-state area.
